Since coming to power, the Taliban have successively restricted the rights of women: now they are prisoners in their own homes, have no access to education, work or even parks. The Taliban’s latest attack is aimed at the future of the country: they are targeting the education of the youngest.

Public schools have already been closed in at least two districts, while madrassas are being built all over the country – as the only means of education for many boys. And those who advocate for education in line with Afghan traditions, like Matiullah Wesa, are arrested and imprisoned.

The EU must now keep a close eye on what is happening in Afghanistan and demand the release of brave advocates like Matiullah Wesa.
