What Are We Defending?

The European Commission has recently presented its White Paper on Defence, the ReArm Europe initiative, and the Preparedness Union Strategy. It is clear: Europe must take more responsibility for its own security. But how we get there is still up for debate. More details here.

More money for more security – not more profits

In the plenary debate on the outcomes of the European Council on March 20, I made one thing clear: We as Greens are ready to support the defense industry – but only where it truly matters: access to skilled workers, raw materials, less bureaucracy, and secure supply chains. However, we expect that increased defense spending will result in greater security for people in Europe – not just higher profits for shareholders. If this is not the case, we need an excess profits tax for companies in the defence industry.
