On 17 September 2024, the European Parliament debated the worsening situation for women in Afghanistan, following the Taliban’s adoption of the law on the “Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice”. This law further erodes the rights of Afghan women, restricting their access to education, employment, and basic freedoms.
In my speech, I spoke about the gravity of these newest restrictions, and I want to make it clear: what is happening in Afghanistan is nothing less than a systematic attack on women’s human rights. Under the Taliban’s rule, women and girls are being erased from public life. This new law is not about virtue; it is about control, oppression, and fear. Afghan women are being deprived of their most fundamental rights— the right to learn, to work, to be seen and heard.
European Parliament Resolution
All of us with political responsibility have a responsibility to act. This is why I initiated this debate and resolution in the European Parliament and I am glad that the resolution passed with exceptional support by the European Parliament . It sends a strong and clear message: we stand with Afghan women.
The resolution condemns the Taliban’s oppressive law and calls for immediate action, including:
- Diplomatic pressure on the Taliban to reverse these repressive measures.
- Targeted humanitarian aid to support Afghan women and girls.
- Safe asylum pathways for women activists and human rights defenders.
- Targeted sanctions against Taliban leaders responsible for these human rights violations.
- We will continue to fight for the rights and dignity of Afghan women and for a future where they can live freely and without fear.
