The work of the Pegasus Inquiry Committee has uncovered a disturbing reality: the uncontrolled misuse of spyware, not only in distant dictatorships but also here in the heart of Europe. Today, we put forward strong recommendations on how to address this issue.
Despite the lack of cooperation from member states’ governments (the approach was rather “Omerta”), the PEGA Committee has worked diligently to expose and detail cases of spyware abuse while making sound and reasonable recommendations to address the problem.
The European Parliament has done its job. Now, it is time for the European Commission to step up and respond with a legislative proposal that safeguards the rights of European citizens and upholds the principles of European democracy. And also the European Council must finally act!
