The situation in the Philippines: My plenary speech

In the last 6 years, 220 Human Rights Defenders have been killed in the Philippines. The government runs smear campaigns against those who dare to speak out. Also my friend Maria Ressa and my twinning partner in the parliamentarian solidarity programme, Sarah Elago, have become victims of these campaigns.

Therefore, the EU must:

  • support local election observation missions and
  • revoke trade privileges if the human rights situation does not improve and impunity continues.
