Next week, the European Commission will publish its White Paper on the Future of European Defense. In the European Parliament, we have already reaffirmed our support for Ukraine this week and discussed the ReArm Europe initiative. Europe must be able to defend itself independently—but that will only work if we do it strategically and together.
The Commission’s White Paper on European Defense: A Green Perspective
The geopolitical reality is clear: Europe must strengthen its defense capabilities to act independently. But increasing defense spending alone is not enough—we need a clear and coordinated strategy. The White Paper on European Defense is an opportunity to take a truly European approach: with strategic investments, less dependence on the U.S. and other global players, and genuine European cooperation. The European Parliament has adopted a resolution, once again emphasizing our demands to the Commission.
ReArm Europe Falls Short of Expectations
The ReArm Europe initiative points in the right direction but brings little additional funding and falls short of expectations. Defense spending must not come at the expense of social cohesion or climate protection. Security is about more than just weapons—it must also include cybersecurity and resilience. Europe needs sustainable financing models, such as Eurobonds or a specialized European defense bank, and must prioritize joint procurement instead of financing national solo efforts. Last week, I discussed this in a webinar with Guntram Wolff and Sergey Lagodinsky.
For More Transparency and Democratic Oversight in Defense
Defense policy must not be decided behind closed doors. The European Parliament needs to be more involved. More cooperation, democratic oversight, and a long-term strategy will make Europe safer—not just higher spending.
An Alternative to Trump and Protectionism
Many people in the U.S. are dissatisfied with their government’s current political direction. They do not want their skills and expertise to be used for short-term profits or reckless isolationism. Europe should offer them an alternative.
With a “New Blue Card for a New Era,” we could create a fast-track visa process, allowing skilled professionals from the U.S. to work in Europe and contribute to a future based on ethics, sustainability, and fair growth.
To all scientists, engineers, and innovators in the U.S.: Come to Europe!
When autocrats strengthen each other, democracies must stand together.
