The misuse of spyware is widespread. MEPs have been targeted, the work of human rights defenders becomes more dangerous because of the constant threat of surveillance. At the same time, European companies are illegally circumventing export regulations and European stakeholders are making money selling spyware to dictators. It is only a matter of time before military-grade spyware ends up in the hands of terrorists.
This year, the European Parliament has drafted recommendations on the regulation of spyware. However, the Commission has so far failed to take them up in a legislative proposal. The EU must finally take on a leading role in this issue!
