A Member of the European Parliament investigating the misuse of Pegasus and other spyware was hacked with Pegasus in the course of that work. This is the conclusion of a new Report Citizen Lab report based on a forensic analysis of Stelios Kouloglou’s phone. The report was published around five years after the Pegasus scandal first came to light.

In my plenary speech, I urged my colleagues to have their phones checked for spyware as well. It is quite likely that other Members of the European Parliament have also been targeted.
This case exposes a systemic failure: Europe still lacks effective rules to prevent the abuse of spyware. Three years ago, the European Parliament set out concrete proposals for tackling the problem. Yet the Commission has failed to act on them so far. That must change urgently.
The greatest danger posed by spyware is not what it does to our phones. It is what it does to our democracy and our security.
