Peace needs women. More and fast. Update: #SHEcurity Index 2020 – und 2021

What has happened so far

In October 2020, the #SHEcurity campaign launched. The goal was and is to direct the focus on all those women who have achieved great things in the field of “Peace and security” as well as to take stock: What is the status of gender parity in foreign and security policy? When will we achieve parity in different areas of the sector, such as politics, policing, and business?

In this article from October, you’ll find more relevant information, including:

  • our reasons for creating the index
  • how many years it will likely take to reach parity
  • how #SHEcurity has been picked up in the media and by leaders in politics

At the launch of the campaign, my and MEP Ernest Urtasuns Report on Gender Equality in EU External Action was adopted by a large majority in Parliament.

What will happen now: Continuation of the campaign!

Today, several months and many followers later, I am happy to announce that the campaign – and consequently the index – will continue:

  • The current index will be updated with new data
  • In addition, countries will be included that have national action plans on the Women, Peace & Security (WPS) agenda and were not represented last time: National Action Plans (NAPs) are an important tool for implementing the Women, Peace and Security agenda. They show how states prioritize different aspects of the WPS agenda and provide information on how WPS activities are steered, financed, and monitored.
  • In addition, there will be a qualitative part with two separate chapters dealing with diversity in peace and security in general, e.g. in relation to people of color or members of the LGBTQIA+ community.

    So: you can be excited!
