In just a few days, the NATO summit in The Hague will begin. The agenda appears designed primarily with the U.S. President in mind: a short summit, a brief declaration—and maybe even a round of golf. That’s how they’re trying to make the meeting appealing to Trump.
It reminds me of the tale “The Emperor’s New Clothes”: a vain emperor parading around in invisible garments—while everyone nods along, eager to please him and afraid to call out the obvious.
#NoKingsDay at the NATO summit: We should not re-enact the fairy tale when the vain ruler from Washington visits Europe. Simple figures — like 3.5% defense spending — might be Trump’s favorite outfit, but they don’t actually make us safer. We don’t need kings, we need security. That’s why the topics Trump likes to ignore — disinformation, dealing with authoritarian leaders, and the security threats posed by the climate crisis — must be part of the conversation.
