How we can help Syrians address Assad’s crimes

“Take out the dead dogs.” That’s how prison guards ordered inmates to carry out the bodies of those who died overnight in Sednaya prison, in Syria. This is just one example of how Assad’s regime brutally dehumanised, oppressed, and harmed people.

After decades of repression, these crimes are not forgotten. More than 130,000 people have disappeared under his rule. Over 100,000 remain missing today.Their families live in unbearable uncertainty. But for the first time, there is a real chance to uncover the truth and hold the regime accountable.

How the EU can support Transitional Justice in Syria

In the European Parliament, I am advocating for supporting this process. Syrian experts are already documenting mass graves, collecting evidence, and identifying missing persons. In my speech, I highlighted how we can help by:

  • Providing financial and political support to Syrian civil society groups fighting for truth, justice, and reconciliation.
  • Pressuring those in power in Syria to make transitional justice a priority
  • Strengthening the UN Mechanism on Missing Persons to ensure independent investigations.
