Four years Woman, Life, Freedom: The fight for freedom continues

Four years ago, Jina Mahsa Amini died in hospital after being detained by Iran’s morality police. Her death sparked the nationwide “Woman, Life, Freedom” protest movement. Four years later, the regime has still not managed to silence this demand for freedom, but the people of Iran continue to pay a heavy price for it.

The regime responded to the protests with brutal violence. Security forces killed hundreds of protesters, including children, and arbitrarily detained tens of thousands. Torture, sexual violence, death sentences and executions have been used to suppress protest and resistance. The repression continues to this day.

My Speech:

On the fourth anniversary of Jina Mahsa Amini’s death, I stressed in my plenary speech: This generation has changed Iran, even if it has not yet changed the regime. We cannot bring freedom to Iran from the outside. But I will continue to ensure we support those inside Iran who risk everything for it.
