Europe’s role in the process toward a sustainable peace between Israel and Palestine

In this plenary week, we debated the next steps in the Middle East peace process in the European Parliament with Dubravka Šuica, EU Commissioner for the Mediterranean region.

Already in September 2025, the European Parliament affirmed with a broad majority: The creation of a sovereign Palestinian state is a prerequisite for lasting peace, for Israel’s security, and for stability in the region. Since the most recent peace agreement came into effect, the last 20 Israeli hostages have been released – in exchange for 2,000 Palestinian prisoners. But some central questions from Trump’s peace plan remain unresolved: the disarmament of Hamas, the withdrawal of the Israeli army from Gaza, and the future administration of the Gaza Strip.

My speech:

In my speech, I emphasized the following: Trump wants the applause — but expects everyone else to deal with the chaotic reality, and that the Gulf states and Europe will pick up the bill. We should use this moment to exert influence and finally break the cycle in which we rebuild again and again what is soon destroyed once more. Palestinians have a right to their own state and to participate in reconstruction. Only this way can a peace emerge that lasts — for Israelis and Palestinians.
