The EU’s Human Rights Sanctions Mechanism: Parliament must have more say!

It’s been quite a struggle – but since last year we have the EU global human rights sanctions regime. With the mechanism, the EU can take action against individuals, organisations and entities responsible for or linked to serious human rights violations around the world, wherever these violations have been committed.
But: We as the European Parliament should have a say, for example, on who is sanctioned! The Commission and the Council need to reach out more to NGOs, journalists and human rights defenders – because they are our allies in the fight against human rights violations.
