Press release
Dr. Hannah Neumann is the newly elected Human Rights and Peace Policy Spokesperson of the Green/European Free Alliance Group in the European Parliament (Greens/EFA) and Vice-Chairperson of the Human Rights Committee (DROI).
With the beginning of the 9th legislature of the European Parliament (2019 – 2024), Dr. Hannah Neumann (MEP), peace and conflict researcher, will be the Greens/EFA Group’s spokesperson on human rights and peace policy.
Last week her membership of the Human Rights (DROI), Foreign Affairs (AFET) and Security and Defence Policy (SEDE) committees was confirmed. On Wednesday, 10 July 2019, she was elected Vice-Chairwoman of the Human Rights Committee at its inaugural meeting.
The foreign policy debate in Strasbourg will focus, among other things, on the tense situation in the Persian Gulf and Venezuela. Urgent resolutions will also be adopted on the human rights situation in Hong Kong, Russia and on the US-Mexican border.
“The human rights situation is worsening worldwide. Human rights defenders are threatened, persecuted and murdered. European weapons are used in international conflicts. The climate crisis is exacerbating regional crises worldwide and forcing more and more people to flee. Women’s rights are attacked by nationalists and populists. The European Union must assume its international responsibility and play a strong and constructive role in putting an end to these abuses. That is what I will work for, together with the other members of the Green Group, and I thank them for their trust.
