German debate on armed drones – My interview with euractiv

In Germany, a familiar debate is flareing-up again: Should the Bundeswehr be allowed to use armed drones? In 2014, the European Parliament has already passed a resolution calling for human rights to be respected in the use of drones. Not much has happened since then. With euractiv I talked about what is needed now so that wars are not even easier to wage and thus become more deadly:

“If we send our soldiers into a conflict, we need to do everything to protect them the best way possible. Armed drones might be part of this, but we must refrain from an approach that makes war easier and more deadly,”

We need a strong European position on the use of armed drones, with human rights and international humanitarian law as a basis. Such a position would be an important starting point for regulation at global level.
