These are not counter sanctions: My plenary speech on China

China has sanctioned many Members of the European Parliament, the entire Human Rights Committee, 27 PSC ambassadors (Member States’ ambassadors who are members of the Political and Security Committee) and a number of think tankers. For me, it is clear that these are not counter sanctions – this is a shotgun targeting our freedom of expression. Thus, the European Parliament should refuse to even start discussing the Comprehensive Agreement on Investment (CAI) with China, let alone ratify it.

Our commitment to human rights, our solidarity with the Uighurs and with the democratic movement in Hong Kong have to be more important than any potential economic benefit of the CAI!
