Freedom has no diagnosis
When security forces harassed her at her university over allegedly inappropriate clothing, Ahoo protested by taking off all her clothes but her underwear. A bold act that exposed the absurdity of the regime. The response? Defamation as mentally ill. A long-standing tool of authoritarian power to stigmatize and intimidate.
The Iranian regime goes even further, planning so-called therapy clinics to “treat” women who resist the strict hijab laws. But this has nothing to do with care—it is pure oppression disguised as medical assistance.
Taking a stand against Iran’s pathologization of women’s resistance
In the European Parliament, we have taken an unequivocal stance on this issue. Together with my colleagues, I co-authored a resolution that strongly condemns the systematic oppression of women in Iran. It denounces the pathologization of resistance — a devious tactic to label women like Ahoo Daryaie as mentally ill for courageously fighting for their freedom.
