Calling for the Immediate Protection of Minorities in Iran – especially the Bahá’í Community

In Iran, minorities are increasingly becoming targets of brutal repression. The Bahá’ís are particularly affected. Harassment, arbitrary arrests, confiscation of property, and violence are steadily increasing, and many families live in constant fear. These are systematic attacks by the Islamic regime on minorities. In my plenary speech on 26 November, I clearly condemned these massive human rights violations and called on the EU to finally take concrete action against the Iranian regime.

My speech

The brutal persecution of the Bahá’í and other minorities in Iran is the desperate attempt of a regime that feels its power slipping away. By suppressing the freedom and rights of minorities, the regime believes it can stabilize its own existence. This violence is not a sign of strength, but an open admission of fear. And it is precisely this fear that we must confront with clear consequences. Our solidarity goes to all those in Iran who, despite brutal threats, continue to fight for their rights – under a regime that seeks to silence them with all its might.

Our Resolution

On 27 November 2025, the European Parliament adopted a resolution that:

  • strongly condemns the systemic oppression and intensified persecution of the Bahá’í community,
  • calls for an immediate end to the violence and the release of all those imprisoned because of their faith,
  • highlights the gender-based persecution of Bahá’í women, who make up two thirds of all imprisoned Bahá’ís,
  • condemns the rising number of executions in Iran and calls on the government to stop abusing the death penalty as a tool of political and religious repression,
  • demands compensation for those affected, the return of confiscated property, and free access to education, employment, and public services for Bahá’ís,
  • urges EU Member States to address these grave human rights violations and to impose targeted sanctions on those responsible for the persecution of the Bahá’ís, and
  • reiterates the demand to designate the IRGC as a terrorist organization and to expand the EU sanctions list.
