Between Solidarity and Escalation: Europe’s Responsibility in the Iran Conflict

Many people in Iran and across the diaspora have long hoped for the regime to fall. At the same time, with every new wave of attacks, fear is growing—fear of bombs, of escalating violence, and of ultimately being left with an even more brutal regime. Already now, the regime is openly threatening retaliation against critics, activists, and political prisoners.

The attacks by the United States and Israel are not only targeting military structures, but also civilian infrastructure. For many Iranians, this brings new insecurity and new risks. At the same time, the regime is using the situation to intensify its internal crackdown. Repression is increasing, and critical voices are being silenced. Once again, those who have been courageously standing up for freedom and democracy for years are paying the highest price for this escalation.

This dynamic is both legally and politically dangerous. Military retaliation, attacks on civilian targets, and continued escalation undermine international law and increase the risk of a broader regional conflagration across the Middle East.

Europe must now take responsibility. We need a clear and united voice for de-escalation, for respect for international law, and for support of Iranian civil society and the diaspora, including protection against transnational repression here in Europe. Our goal must be clear: to strengthen the people of Iran—today and for the future. Because lasting security in the region will only be possible if freedom, human rights, and political self-determination have a real chance.
