Afghanistan: We need tens of thousands of places in resettlement programmes! My plenary speech

Afghan women are marching the streets of Kabul, although they know they will probably be beaten up by the Taliban. Our local partners are stuck in refugee camps in Pakistan and don’t know what to do. And what has been the reaction of EU ministers of Home Affairs? They didn’t pledge a single resettlement place because they were afraid of bad opinion polls. That’s how the EU betrays the foundations on which its foreign policy stands: The trust of our local partners and our commitment to human rights. At the next EU resettlement conference, we need pledges for tens of thousands of places! More in my plenary speech:
