The execution of German-Iranian Jamshid Sharmahd is a shocking example of how the Iranian regime systematically oppresses critics and minorities — far beyond its own borders. He was held in isolation for over four years, without a fair trial or consular access. For me, one thing is clear: words alone are not enough. Concrete consequences are now needed to respond decisively to this attack on human rights.
Targeted Repression and Transnational Persecution
In 2020, Sharmahd was abducted during a business trip and transported to Tehran. In an interview with Euronews, I highlighted how the regime actively pursues individuals worldwide whom it perceives as threats. His daughter, Gazelle Sharmahd, fought tirelessly for his release. However, the regime tolerates no dissent and uses its judiciary and law enforcement to silence every voice that opposes its ideology.
Time for clear consequences in EU-Iran relations
Adding the IRGC to the EU Terror List
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) is a tool of oppression and a destabilizing force in the entire region. In my conversation with Euronews, I emphasised that the time to add the IRGC to the EU’s terror list is now. Lithuania has already taken this step – the EU must follow suit. Along with sanctions against IranAir, this would send a clear signal: we do not accept repression or violence as tools to secure power.
For a Europe That Defends Its Values
The case of Jamshid Sharmahd shows: we need a decisive Iran policy that prioritizes human rights and democracy over economic interests. The people in Iran, who bravely fight for their freedom and rights, deserve more than words of sympathy. It is now up to Europe, together with the German government, to increase pressure on Tehran and stand up for the values that unite us as a community.
